Tom left Art School in 1973, starting work as a Window Dresser for Burton the Tailor. Followed by a career path from display teams into marketing with various retailers, most notably as Marketing Manager with ScS Suite Centres from 1982 to 1987, then joining Robson Brown Advertising.
He worked at Robson Brown at varying levels from 1987 to 2010, reaching Main Board Director position. When Robson Brown was put into administration at the end of November 2010, Tom started Hedley McEwan with business partner, Duncan McEwan.

TH: Are the city’s brand values reflected in your own agency culture?
TH: Absolutely – 100%
TH: Does being based in NE influence your creative output? If so, how?
TH: Certainly – we are surrounded by inspirational places; none more so than our new office location at Toffee Factory in Ouseburn
TH: What makes your agency offer different?
TH: Our ideas are always rooted in definite business objectivity, not merely creativity for its own sake
And our routes to market are not restricted by ‘traditional’ thinking
TH: Why should clients consider sourcing work from Newcastle agencies?
TH: In addition to the values above, the lower cost best (whether real or perceived) is a real benefit
