The festive campaign created in-house promotes the e-commerce offering by championing generosity.
Celebrating the joy of gift giving, Amazon’s Christmas campaign tells the story of a singing janitor who is cheered along to realise his festive dreams, with the help of his colleagues.
The campaign, created by Amazon’s in-house team in partnership with production company Hungry Man, is called ‘Midnight Opus’. It tells the story of a theatre janitor who has a hidden love for singing.
The heartwarming film directed by award-winning director, Wayne McClammy, opens with the janitor going about his daily tasks while singing quietly to himself. As he opens his locker, audiences can see a picture of him on stage singing as a younger man. When one of his colleagues overhears the janitor's singing as it echoes through the theatre, they are inspired to surprise him.
The janitor's colleagues come together to transform the theatre into a stage fit for a performance with lighting and staging. As a backing track kicks in, the colleagues present him with an Amazon package containing a black tuxedo jacket. The janitor is urged on to sing and wearing his brand new jacket he performs a touching version of Bacharach-David’s ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love.’ The spot underlines the power of generosity and the joy in gift-giving.
“‘Midnight Opus’ is a story that celebrates the joy from doing something special for the people in your life. I think we all know how wonderful it feels to be the recipient of even the smallest act of kindness – whether that be a thoughtful gift or an encouraging word – and we wanted to bring that ineffable emotion to life,” says Jo Shoesmith, Global Chief Creative Officer at Amazon.
The campaign aims to capture the spirit of generosity and showcase Amazon’s e-commerce offering. Focusing on relationships in the workplace, the film takes a broader approach to gift-giving which can often centre around families.
The advert will run as 30-second, 60-second and 90-second spots nationwide across Broadcast TV, Video On Demand, Online Video, Cinema and Social channels. It will also run in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden, and in the US and Canada throughout November and December.
