CharityIt has been three years since the catastrophic Grenfell Tower fire raged in London in 2017, devastating the building and leaving 72 people dead and hundreds more without a home. In the years that have followed justice has yet to be served for those victims and their names have slowly slipped out of the news.
To mark the third anniversary, Justice4Grenfell are bringing these victims back into the spotlight in a campaign created by BBH London. Using an inch of column space donated by a range of print publications, the campaign recreated the shape of Grenfell Tower typographically, using the names of the 72 victims. OOH space has also been donated, enabling the campaign to feature on billboards across London, with a focus on the area directly surrounding the site.
It is a powerful memorial to those who lost their lives. The campaign is also an important reminder that people are still demanding justice for those whose lives were affected forever by this fire and underlines the fact that many people across the UK continue to live in unsafe housing.
Justice4Grenfell was set up as a community-led organisation focused on remembering the victims whilst also continuing to hold the authorities to account. Yvette Williams MBE, one of the organisation’s co-founders, explains: “What happened at Grenfell is a mirror of everything that is wrong with our society. We cannot bring 72 beautiful people back. But we can force change to ensure these ills never happen again.”
While the current global pandemic and ensuing lockdown have been a difficult time for many, it has also revealed the deep rooted and systemic social issues that permeate the UK today. This campaign is a powerful reminder that three years on, the community affected by the Grenfell tower disaster are still waiting in limbo for answers they so desperately seek. A campaign such as this ensures that it is a disaster that is not forgotten, placing the very real human loss at the heart of a powerful and simple visual.
