The sustainable chair, created by Uncommon Creative Studio, highlights the environmental impact of overwashing clothes.
'The Rewear Chair’ is a celebration and reappraisal of the laundry chair — a piece of beautiful, sustainable furniture design, with a powerful message from Ecover to reduce the environmental impact of overwashing clothes and think more consciously about our laundry habits.

FMCGRather than feel guilt about a chair in the corner of the room that piles up laundry, Ecover is encouraging audiences to embrace the chair and has built a custom-made laundry chair designed to hold clothes.
The chair is a piece of sleek, sustainable design that can air up to a week’s worth of clothes. Collapsible and adaptable, it is made from 100% sustainable materials: wind-felled cedar, complemented with reclaimed ash fixtures, and natural beeswax to smooth the joints. The chair is complete with a natural felt insert infused with cedar oil to deodorise clothes.
The bespoke chair will be showcased at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven between the 19–27th October 2024.
The chair has been designed to bring to life the importance of making more sustainable choices and embracing sustainable behaviours.
“We’re taking a common behaviour and turning it into something beautiful and intentional,” said Nils Leonard from Uncommon Creative Studio. “The eco-friendly choice can be the most beautiful choice too, and The Rewear Chair proves that good design can help us rethink our habits for the better. This is design at its best, solving problems but also asking questions.”
Sustainability is often about making sacrifices, yet by flipping the concept of ‘messy’ on its head and encouraging audiences to embrace their existing habits with sustainability in mind shows that being more eco friendly need not be challenging.
A report from Ecover reveals how deeply cultural and social expectations have shaped Britain’s laundry habits. Decades of misunderstanding fueled by misguided household traditions and beliefs have led nearly one in five adults (18%) to mistakenly believe that washing less often doesn’t impact the planet, while one in ten (11%) feel pressured by societal standards to do laundry more frequently, despite being aware of their carbon footprint. The Rewear Chair aims to re-educate audiences and take the pressure off the wash.
By reframing existing habits to show the benefits of washing clothes less, the unique chair brings to life sustainability through design, encouraging people to lighten the load and embrace the chaos of the wash chair.
