Media & Entertainment‘Culture Vanguards’, an installation at London’s much-visited Outernet, platforms the stories of Black British creatives to spotlight their achievements, struggles, and triumphs and increase representation in the creative industries.
Epidemic Sound, a sound tracking platform for content creation, Take More Photos, a community-led platform, and agency, Mediahub, teamed up to present the immersive exhibition.
Running from the end of October until the end of December, the exhibition is free to attend. It features four creative visionaries and celebrates their talents and the roles they have played in revolutionising the creative industries.
These include British Fashion Designer, Creative Director and Artist Samuel Ross MBE, Founder of eponymous luxury fashion label Bianca Saunders, British Rapper, Screenwriter and Film Director Rapman, and Artist in Photography and Design Ronan McKenzie. Each has left their own mark on fashion, music, film and photography, and art and design. The exhibition presents their journeys towards becoming the ‘culture vanguards’ of their generations.
Set in The Now Building, the exhibition is comprised of imagery and sound specifically tailored to portray each story. The unique format embraces storytelling and craft in a way that allows visitors to become fully immersed in the individuals’ stories.
A creative use of space and sound, the installation authentically platforms Black British talent to a wide audience. Speaking on the work, Bianca Saunders, British Fashion Designer, said: "Being included as part of the ‘Culture Vanguards’ and celebrated alongside other Black British talent is an incredible honour. Visibility is so important because it shows the next generation that they can achieve anything they set their minds to”.
She continued, “It’s vital for young creatives to see people who look like them breaking barriers, creating new narratives, and being celebrated for their work. This recognition means a lot, not just for me, but for the broader movement toward greater representation in fashion and the arts. Starting my brand is what I wanted to do and also let people know anything is possible in any industry”.
‘Culture Vanguards’ was developed with Mediahub’s Radical and Disruptive Lab and Outernet London’s Creative Studio. Alongside the exhibition, the campaign is running across out-of-home in the form of a 30-second pre-roll video between segments at Outernet, and an OOH display on the New Visa screen at Tottenham Court Road.
A celebration of Black British creatives, ‘Culture Vanguards’ platforms the voices of inspiring individuals in areas which can often lack representation. The immersive exhibition portrays each story of the culture vanguards with creativity and individuality, using specifically tailored imagery and sound. An effective use of media, ‘Culture Vanguards’ showcases the power of creativity and helps pave the way for a new generation of Black British talent inspired by the achievements of those that came before.
