The New York Times Magazine
Over 24 hours on Saturday 19th May 2018, writers and photographers from the New York Times Magazine travelled around New York City, photographing and talking to people in love, for a special issue called Love City.
Shot by the photographer Ryan McGinley, the issue was captured on one rainy New York day which, as the crew put it, was actually kind of romantic. Love City saw 24 couples and 24 kisses captured in 24 hours for 24 unique covers which were then distributed randomly across the city and to subscribers.
Many of the couples were found via a social media request which garnered 1,000 replies in two days. The team took a double decker bus around the city, picking up couples as they went and photographing them kissing on the bus’s top deck. This allowed McGinley to capture the raw intensity of such an intimate moment, whilst speeding through the intensely public city streets.
From the Staten Island ferry to Club Lust, Times Square, a shared Ramadan and a professional proposal, the issue is a celebration of 24 hours of desire, romance and heartache in New York City.
Love City captures the moments you’d miss if you weren’t looking out for them, the moments of love in a city, in a country, that at the moment often feels full of hate. We’ve become accustomed to hearing talk of divided countries, nations and streets. But what of the other stories, the happiness, hardship and beauty of relationships?
Love City captures them all in a fitting tribute to the city that never sleeps.
