The New Yorker - #ILookLikeASurgeon

During an already relatively contentious year for diversity and feminism, The New Yorker’s Health, Medicine & The Body Issue addressed the subject head on with their animated cover ‘Operating Theatre’ by the French artist Malika Favre. The cover depicts four female surgeons peering over the imaginary patient, said by Favre to represent the “feeling of people watching you lose consciousness…Most people have experienced it but it still remains mysterious”.

After the cover was released, a subsequent social media storm ensued, focused around the #ILookLikeASurgeon. Female surgeons around the world got involved, Tweeting photos of their teams in surgery and drawing attention to the lack of visibility for both female and minority individuals in an industry traditionally dominated by white men.
