The sister duo behind the LA-based fashion label Rodarte have released an eerily beautiful trailer for their debut feature film, Woodshock, starring the brand’s muse, Kirsten Dunst. Laura and Kate Mulleavy have co-written and directed their film, drawing comparisons with Tom Ford, the American fashion designer turned director behind A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals.

The Mulleavy sisters’ first foray into the film world was designing several of Natalie Portman’s costumes for the 2010 drama Black Swan. The dark romance of the Rodarte collections are often inspired by the worlds of art and film, with clear narratives running through each season, allowing the sisters to tell their stories through their designs. The ethereal, creepy and slightly trippy trailer for Woodshock shows Dunst as Theresa, a woman using cannabinoid drugs to cope with a recent bereavement. The film’s genre is difficult to place but the wistful, dreamlike and mystical Californian aesthetic of the trailer ties into that of the brand itself.

The trailer’s release follows the brand’s invitation to show in Paris at Haute Couture Fashion Week in July, as well as the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. announcement of a Rodarte exhibition later in 2018, the museum’s first solo fashion exhibition.

The costumes for Woodshock have been designed by the sisters along with Christie Wittenborn, a Hollywood costume designer. It is interesting that the brand has opted to design their own costumes, something that Tom Ford expressly chose not to do. A film in which the principal character wears the brand’s clothing becomes an excellent platform from which to sell clothes. On the other hand, the sisters' decision to undertake the creation of the clothing could just come from a simple desire to control the aesthetics of the film. Whatever the reasoning behind the decision, there is no denying that Woodshock is a carefully designed nod to the brand itself.

The film is due for release on September 15th 2017.
