Girlguiding UK
Being a girl or woman in the world today is noticeably different to that which our predecessors lived through in the early 20th century. We have to contend with the Facetuning perfection of Instagram for starters, a platform that our ancestors wouldn’t have even dreamt into existence.
And as the world has evolved, so too have many centuries-old organisations including Girlguiding UK, who recently announced the biggest design overhaul in the brand’s history. Founded in 1910, the Girl Guides Association started following the establishment of the Scouts, after a protest was staged demanding girls the right to their own organisation. It is today the UK’s largest girls-only youth association with around 100,000 volunteers nationwide.
Girlguiding UK worked with the design studio Red Stone to redesign 187 badges, and the corresponding range of handbooks, to better reflect young women’s lives and the world they live in. The badges have been grouped under six main themes: Skills For My Future, Have Adventures, Be Well, Know Myself, Express Myself and Take Action. While the first three focus on the individual, the second three focus on connecting with other people and the world around you.
One of the aims for the redesign is to introduce more girls to STEM skills as well encouraging wellbeing and creativity. New badges include coding, animation and zero waste, as well as protesting, human rights and mindfulness.
There are four age group sections and Girl Guides can range from five through to 25-years-old. The new designs were created after a survey was conducted with around 50,000 girls and young women from Girl Guide groups across the UK.
The badges themselves are bright, bold graphics designed to appeal to every age group. Whether you’re a Brownie or a Rainbow and fancy campaigning or blogging, there will be a badge for you.
