‘Being frazzled in the workplace has been dangerously normalised’
Comedian and actress Ruby Wax, Founder of mental health charity Frazzled, on taking stress seriously.
Partnerships such as these highlight the importance of prompting vital conversations and creating environments in which people feel empowered to open up.
The benefits of open conversation are far-reaching, not least because, as the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved. But it can be difficult to find the space, or the person, to open up to.
To raise awareness ahead of this year’s World Mental Health Day, Dave and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) have partnered with Murdock London Barbers to encourage positive conversations around mental health.
The campaign features co-branding in Murdock barber shops, TV ads, social spots and five new episodes of Dave and CALM’s podcast, Conversations Against Living Miserably.
The goal is to let people know that support is there for them, every single day of the year through the CALM helpline and services. Alongside CALM resources, there are other people and places you can turn to. Every barber at Murdock is trained in Mental Health First Aid to encourage people to open up and answer honestly when they’re asked, how are you?
It’s more important than ever that we continue to look out for each other and be there for those around us when times are tough.

Branding in-store will feature messages like, ‘Feeling good after your haircut? Why not check in on a mate by text on the way home? Share that good feeling.’
Simon Gunning, CALM CEO said: “Comedy and humour can be incredibly powerful in opening up the conversation surrounding mental health, which is why we’re hugely grateful for Dave’s continued, amazing support. Six months have passed since the government announced lockdown in the UK. In this time the CALM helpline answered 71,261 calls and chats.
“That’s over 12,000 hours talking to people and 645,240 chat messages exchanged around topics such as isolation, anxiety, relationship concerns, health worries, financial stress and suicidal thoughts. It’s more important than ever that we continue to look out for each other and be there for those around us when times are tough.”
Every piece of content aims to be both uplifting and humorous, offering people new resources, coupled with comedy, to support them during these uncertain times. Partnerships such as these highlight the importance of prompting vital conversations and creating environments in which people feel empowered to open up.
The CALM helpline is available 5pm - midnight, 365 days a year on 0800 58 58 58. Resources can also be found on the CALM website.
