How Converse refused to conform at Christmas
Vilde Tobiassen, Senior Art Director at MOX, on going against the tide and embracing the feral energy of brat for winter with the ‘night b4 xcxmas’.
Who knew that the humble paint industry was itself in need of a makeover? Well, come to think of it, probably all of us. You need a tool (or a spoon) to open the lid, there’s no pouring spout and the can rusts if it’s left in the shed. Which let's face it, it always is.

US start-up Backdrop has not only designed a new can, but is intent on transforming the whole process of painting and decorating. From the trip to the DIY store to the swatches and the brushes. They’ve carefully curated their own colour palette, making choosing the right shade much more simple. And they’ve designed a high-quality range of decorating tools that don’t cost the earth.
In the traditional world of paint Backdrop stands out with its bold branding and irreverent photography style, which speaks to a younger audience.
Like many new brands they exist to help the planet as well as themselves. From the beginning Backdrop partnered with The International Rescue Committee, a non-profit responding to the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The best entrepreneurs don’t just accept the everyday challenges, they use design to make them better. At the moment Backdrop is only available in the US. But let’s hope it’s not long before this innovative new paint brand makes it across the Atlantic.
