JR
French artist JR brings his poster art to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Photography printed on extra-large sheets of fabric is attached to scaffold, allowing giant athletes to interact with the urban landscape.
French triathlete Léonie Periault rises out of Guanabara Bay, her armspan stretching more than 98 feet. Cologne-based, Sudanese high jumper Mohamed Younes Idriss is depicted leaping over a 25-story apartment complex in Flamengo. Both athletes missed out on Olympic qualification. “He missed out on qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics but he is there somehow,” says JR.
The program, which began this year, was intended to “open up Olympism and its values to the widest possible audience,” according to a statement by the Olympic committee.
